Beta reading: Authors need objective feedback about their work. Before sending your manuscript for editing, a beta read is a comprehensive read-through from the perspective of a reader, not an editor. I offer a write-up containing constructive feedback on such elements as the flow of the story/ideas, characterization, dialogue, and potential plot holes or inconsistencies and provide ideas for improving the narrative. With this service I do not do any editorial work such as correcting grammatical errors.
Content editing: Sometimes, the beta read reveals that a project requires more extensive rewriting or a deeper edit. If you're having trouble with a rewrite of your manuscript and just can't get it to sound right, I can assist you in reorganizing or rebuilding it.
Copy editing: After the content of the manuscript has been finalized, the next step is for an editor to make sure your writing is sensible, clear, and grammatically correct. I offer a line-by-line service that includes correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax as well as ensuring accuracy and consistency of voice and style. In addition, I will address clarity and flow of sentences, appropriateness of word choice, and provide suggestions for reorganization of story and/or ideas. Overall, I will make sure that what you are trying to say is what the reader understands is being said.
Proofreading: Before a project can be ready for publishing, it needs a final check to make sure that no errors were introduced when incorporating edits and that all text is clean and perfect for the typesetting stage. At this stage, I will do a final read to correct cosmetic errors such as typos and mistakes in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and spacing.
